Did you know?
The term Mushin comes from the Japanese 無心 and literally means “without thought”. It’s a state of mind that all Karateka must strive for in their daily practice. This is undoubtedly one of the meanings of “Kara” (空 = emptiness) in Karate.
In the Mushin state, the mind attaches itself to no thought and works very quickly instinctively. The absence of thought enables it to act and react in a flash without being disturbed by any judgment. As the mind is not fixed or occupied by thought or emotion, it is open to everything.
In fact, Mushin is a state of mental clarity produced by the absence of ego.
Mushin must be worked on in Kata and Kumite, even in competition, in order to approach perfection.
